Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar congratulate Hima Das as she becomes the first Indian to win Gold on a world track

18-year-old Assamese sprinter, Hima Das, made the entire nation proud by winning the women’s 400 metre final at the Under-20 Athletics Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland on 12 July, 2018. Hima has now become the fourth Indian ever to win a medal at the U-20 World Championships and the second to win a gold after Neeraj Chopra won the Javelin Throw at Bydgoszcz in 2016.

No Indian woman before Das has won a gold medal in a World Championship at any level, be it youth, junior or senior. She is also the first Indian — men or women — to have won a gold in a track event at the world level. Speaking to IAAF after the win, Das said, “I’m very proud to hold the Indian flag on my shoulders, I’d like to thank India and my team leader and my coach. My biggest strength is the last 100m. Next for me will be the Asian Games but my big dream is to compete in the Olympics one day.”
