How Diljit Dosanjh took to playing hockey for ‘Soorma’ | Hindi Movie News

Director Shaad Ali’s Soorma has already opened in cinemas today. Diljit Dosanjh, who plays hockey star Sandeep Singh in the film, has received positive responses for his performance. However, few would know that the singer-actor from Punjab had never played a sport in his life until the biopic was offered to him.

BT had been to the film’s shoot in Chandigarh where Diljit was filming a string of scenes on the hockey field. He was seen striking goals, performing the drag flick Sandeep Singh (former captain of the Indian hockey side) is known for and owning the Indian team’s jersey – the actor had basically transformed himself into a hockey player for the course of the shoot.

Sandeep Singh’s brother, who was directing the sports scenes of the film, also plays a Pakistani hockey player in ‘Soorma’. He was seen helping Shaad Ali in setting up the frames and getting the actors’ body language right. A host of Indian and international hockey players were roped in to depict teams from different countries that India defeated during a key tournament in the second innings of Sandeep’s career. Drones were used to film the aerial shots. The unit shot from the early hours of the day and wrapped by sun-down to ensure they had the right kind of lighting.

The unit was stationed in Chandigarh for over two weeks. In between shoots, actors, particularly Vijay Raaz, who plays Sandeep’s hockey coach, was seen playing cricket with the hockey stick. And with all this behind-the-scenes action, the contest showed in the film looks technically and emotionally right.
