The idiom ‘two is company and three’s a crowd’ in cinematic lingo is often translated as ‘two is a clash and three’s just unnecessary’. That’s what is about to happen on the Independence Day weekend.
The makers of Akshay Kumar-starrer Gold had ‘booked’ an August 15 release date a year ago. The film, which is based on free India’s first gold medal win in hockey at the 1948 Olympics, seemed like the right fit for the Independence Day weekend. However, earlier this year, the makers of John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee’s thriller, Satyamev Jayate, stated that they would release the movie on August 15. When asked about ‘the clash’ at an event recently, John had said that he’s good friends with Akshay and the release date is to be sorted between their films’ producers.
On Wednesday, the Deols — Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby — announced that they were coming with their comic entertainer, Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se on the same date. Akki shares close ties with the Deols — Sunny and Bobby. But we guess when it comes to release dates, the industry can’t afford to let friendships cloud their judgement. After all. like they repeat ad nauseum — there are only 52 Fridays and triple the number of releases each year. So someone has to stamp on someone else’s foot. Ouch!
