PadMan| Akshay Kumar recalls the scene when he wore pink panties with the pad

Akshay Kumar has mastered the art of telling an entertaining story with a social message. His last film, ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ had an important message to tell and raked in moolah at the box-office too. So audience is expecting the same with his 25th January release, PadMan as well.

The film is based on the Twinkle Khanna’s short story in ‘The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land’ from her last book, The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad and has even got her onboard as the producer. The film tells the real life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, an illiterate man from Coimbatore who brought about a small revolution for low-income Indian women by inventing a low-cost machine to make sanitary pads. Muruganantham had to wear his product himself and even the reel character followed suit. In an interview to Firstpost Akki said, “I kept looking at the pink panties and then wore it with the pad in it. I got scared only for those 30 seconds.”

But shockingly, even Khiladi Kumar wasn’t aware about periods before the age of 20. “I learnt about menstruation only when I was 19-20. I never held a pad in my hand. Nobody in my family asked me to buy sanitary napkin and it’s only in the last two years that I came to know about it in great detail. I have now learnt that menstruating women are considered ritually impure and polluted, and they are often isolated as untouchables. That they can’t touch pickles, enter kitchen, or go to temples, wash their hair. Then, too many girls end up dropping out of school because they don’t have supplies to manage their periods,” he further said.

But thankfully the next generation in his family learnt about this earlier than him. Akshay confirmed that his wife practices what she preaches. He told Firstpost,  “His mother has explained everything to him. Nothing is hidden in our family. Aarav knows. I am not living a double standard life that I am talking to people about it but I have hidden it from my own son.”

Well, cine goers may remember her Twinkle Khanna as a terrible actress, but her superstar husband says she makes a great producer.  “She has good sense and sensibilities of what kind of film she should make. Padman is her idea, her content,” he said.

The star couple has romanced each other on screen before they tied the knot and PadMan marks the beginning of their new collaboration as producer-actor. R Balki film also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in the lead and is releasing on January 25th.
